The result of 35 years of beekeeping experience from the biggest honey producer in Scandinavia.
A lightweight beehive based on long term experience in beekeeping and technical knowledge about suitable materials for good quality beehives in different environments and apiarys in Northern Europe, arctic Russia, Australia and New Zealand.
The hive material has been field tested for about 30 years in Finnish winter colder than -35 C and in summer heat over + 30 C. In recent years the hives have been tested with good results also in extreme weather conditions of Siberia.
The body material is food grade, extra hardened, expanded polystyrene (EPS) with a density over 100 kg/m3. The boxes will last for decades with proper use and service. The hives are manufactured with ISO 9001 quality certified process and materials.
The hive uses a unique system with plastic runners which protects the polystyrene when removing frames with a hive tool. It also features built in handles for easy lifting.

Painting
Although you dont need to paint polystyrene hive parts, like the wooden equivalent, they will last much longer if you do.
Masonry paints or even the cuprinol shades can be used.
Cleaning.
The hives are best cleaned with a solution of washing soda. This will dissolve propolis and clean off any dirt etc. Be careful trying to remove propolis and wax with the hive tool, as it will dig into the polystyrene if the tool is not kept flat.
Sterilisation of the hive can be carried out with a solution of household bleach, normally a 10% solution is recommended. Virkon S, obtainable from farm suppliers and some vets is also a very good cleaning liquid. Wear suitable protection, including eye protection, when cleaning your hive.
